Majrooh Sultanpuri

1 October is the birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri (1919–2000).
He was one of India’s most celebrated lyricists, whose poetry resonated with emotions, romance, and the socio-political realities of his time. Starting his career as an Urdu poet, Majrooh gained recognition for his exceptional ghazals before transitioning to writing lyrics for Hindi films. He made his Bollywood debut with the film Shahjehan (1946), where his song “Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya” became an instant classic.

Over a career spanning five decades, Majrooh worked with leading composers like Naushad, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, and Laxmikant–Pyarelal. He penned the lyrics for iconic songs like “Chahunga Main Tujhe” (Dosti), “Aane Se Uske Aaye Bahar” (Jeene Ki Raah), and “Ek Din Bik Jayega” (Dharam Karam). Known for his ability to adapt to changing times while maintaining his poetic elegance, he became one of the few lyricists who shaped the golden era of Hindi cinema.

Majrooh Sultanpuri’s work transcended mere entertainment; his poetry conveyed depth, wisdom, and an understanding of human emotions.
In 1993, he was honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in recognition of his significant contributions to Indian cinema.
