Dilip Kumar
7 July is the death anniversary of the legendary actor Dileep Kumar ( 1922-2021).
Born Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan), his family moved to Bombay in 1930 to start a fruit business. He moved to Pune in the 1940s to start a canteen business. It was actress Devika Rani who spotted the handsome young man and helped him to enter the films with a new name Dilip Kumar.
The 1947 film Jugnu was a breakthrough. With the success of the 1949 film Shaheed, there was no looking back.
By the 1950s, Dileep Kumar emerged as one of the most versatile actors and the biggest star in the history of Hindi films. Renowned for his intense performances and ability to portray a wide range of characters, he captivated audiences with his memorable roles in classics like “Mughal-e-Azam,” “Devdas,” and “Madhumati.”
Dilip Kumar had relationships with actresses Kamini Kaushal and Madhubala before marrying Saira Banu in 1966.
His acting prowess earned him numerous accolades, including several Filmfare Awards and the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
Beyond his acting, Dileep Kumar’s contributions extended to filmmaking and direction.
