Kamala Sohonie.
18 June is the birth anniversary of Kamala Sohonie.
Kamala Sohonie (1912-1998) ensured herself a place in history as the first Indian woman to receive a Ph.D in a scientific discipline.She received a scholarship in 1937 to study in Cambridge and recieved the PhD from Cambridge in 1939.
She was the first Indian biochemist to receive a PhD in Science.
She had already created history by becoming the first woman to be admitted to the prestigious Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.
The Director, Nobel laureate Sir C V Raman had initially refused to give her admission. She paved the way for more women to be accepted into the institution. Her research project was about the effects of vitamins and nutritive values of pulses, paddy, and groups of food items.
Her work on the nutritional benefits of the palm extract called ‘Neera’ led to a special Rashtrapati Award from
President Rajendra Prasad.
