Wole Soyinka.

Wole Soyinka is the first African and the only Nigerian writer to have won a Nobel Prize so far. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 “for his wide-ranging and complex works, in which the elemental forces of humankind are used in a scourging, poetic fashion”.

Soyinka is a playwright, poet and essayist. In its citation, the Nobel Committee referred to him as a writer “who in a wide cultural perspective and with poetic overtones fashions the drama of existence”.

Other prominent African writers who have won the Nobel Prize include Naguib Mahfouz from Egypt, J.M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer from South Africa.
