Bombay House, the iconic headquarters building of the Tata group of companies is completing 100 years.
The Tata companies founded by Jamshedaji Tata used to function from the Navasari buildings since 1904.
In 1921 the Bombay Municipal Corporation put on auction a plot measuring 21273 sq ft which was purchased by the Tatas.
Sir Dorabji Tata, elder son of Jamshedaji Tata decided to construct a headquarters building from where all the Tata companies could function. The architect was George Wittet, a Scot who had earned fames as the designer of the landmark Gateway of India. He later joined the Tata group and designed more than 40 buildings for the group. He later became the chairman of the Tata Engineering Company ( now Tata Motors).
Sir Dorabji Tata opened the three storied building, Bombay House in July 1924. A fourth floor was added in 1942.
The heritage building was extensively renovated and refurbished in 2017. The architects were Somaya and Kalappa.
The Ground Floor houses the Tata Experience Centre and the iconic ‘1903 Lounge ‘.
The First floor is occupied by Tata Chemicals, Tata Power and Tata Industries.
The Second floor is occupied by Tata Steel.
The Third floor is the headquarters of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group and Tata Trusts.
The Fourth floor is the Executive Floor. It has the office of the Chairman, Board Room etc.
Tatas have grown into an multinational conglomerate in the past century.
Bombay House on Homi Modi Street, Mumbai remains the most admired corporate adress and the corner room on the fourth floor continue to be the most sought after Chair in the corporate world of India.
