R K Lakshman.
24 October is the birth anniversay of the legendary cartoonist RK Lakshman (1921-2015).
He started his career illustrating the books of his brother RK Narayan.
Lakshman joined the Free Press Journal in Bombay as a political cartoonist and later moved on to the Times of India.
Lakshman is remembered as the creator of the immortal character, “The Common Man”.
First appeared in 1951, the Common Man represented the hopes, aspirations and the foibles of the average Indian through a daily cartoon strip, “You Said It”, in the Times of India.
The Common Man was made into a film in French in 1975, featuring Ben Kingsley.
The cartoon character of a boy with a paint brush helped Asian Paints to become the number one paint company in the country.
Lakshman was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and the Magsasay Award.
