Niels Bohr.
7 October is the birth anniversary of one of the greatest theoretical physicists of all time, Niels Bohr (1885-1962).
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and studied under the great Ernest Rutherford.
Bohr is famous for his revolutionary theory on atomic structures and radiation emission.
Thanks to his fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.
The Institute he founded in 1920 for research in theoretical physics, is now known as the Niels Bohr Institute.
Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany and Bohr escaped to Britain in 1943, and joined the British mission to the Manhattan project of the USA, to produce an atom bomb.
He spent the post war years to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
