I mourn the passing of Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez ( 1928- 22 October 2024),
Father of Liberation Theology.
Fr Gutierrez was born in Peru and educated in the University of Louvain, Belgium. He was a Dominican Catholic priest and became the Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, France.
The profound theologian was chaplain of IMCS Peru (Unión Nacional de Estudiantes Católicos del Perú UNEC).
As the father of liberation theology, he dedicated his life to advocating for justice and the poor, inspiring countless people with his vision of a world grounded in compassion and equality.
His legacy will live on through his teachings and the countless lives he touched.
It was during my days as an engineering student in Calicut in the 1970s that I had my encounter with liberation theology. I was an active member of the catholic students organisation AICUF. Jesuit priests were in charge of AICUF in those days. Fr Sebastian Kappen SJ was one such Jesuit who led by example.
Jesuits were the backbone of the liberation theology movement in the South American countries.
They taught sliding with the poor (preferential option for the poor) and the downtrodden was the true Christian theology as taught by Christ.
Pope Francis was a supporter of liberation theology in his early days as a Jesuit priest in Argentina.
I celebrate his life and commitment to faith in action.
