R K Narayan.
10 October is the birth anniversary of R K Narayan (1906-2001).
RK Narayan was among the most well known Indian writers in English. Narayan was the writer responsible for making Indian literature popular abroad.
I Graham Greene helped to publish his first book abroad and he never had to look back. The novel “Guide” won him the Sahitya Accademy award and was later made into a very successful film with Dev Anand enacting the role of the guide.
Narayan is best remembered as the creator of the fictitious village of Malgudi, loosely based on the Mysore of his younger days.
“Malgudi Days”, was later made into a very popular serial by Doordarshan which endeared Narayan to people all over the country. Swamy and his friends will remain in the memories of generations for ever.
RK Narayan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1980. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the country.
