Jagjit Singh.
10 October is the death anniversary of singer and composer Jagjit Singh (1941-2011).
Jagjit and wife Chitra Singh were called the King and Queen of Ghazal. Their album comprising music from the films Arth and Sath Sath, is the largest selling album ever of HMV. Jagjit’s album with Lata Mangeshkar holds the record in the non-film category.
Born in Bikaner, Rajasthan, Jagjit married Chitra Shome (her second marriage) in 1969, and together they ruled the ghazal world during the 1970s and 80s.
In 1990, Vivek, their only son, died in a road accident and the devastated couple stopped singing altogether. Jagjit slowly returned to music after an year but Chitra never sang again.
The ghazals and film songs of Jagjit Singh remain among the most popular to this day.
