1 October is the birth anniversary of Sachin Dev Burman
(1906 -1975).

The legendary composer was the heir to the throne
of the Tripura kingdom, who renounced his royalty to pursue his passion for music. He began his career with Bengali films in 1937. Later Sachin Dev Burman began composing for Hindi films creating music for over 100 films.

Celebrated singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar and Asha Bhosle have sung SD Burman’s compositions.

SD Burman shifted to Mumbai in 1944. Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya, crooned by Geeta Dutt, was his breakthrough song. The composer collaborated with Dev Anand’s Navketan Films in the 1950s, and created hit songs for films such as Baazi (1951) Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and Kala Pani (1958).
Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) are two iconic films of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rahman.
His son RD Burman was an equally celebrated film music director.
