ചെന്നൈ ( മദ്രാസ് ) നഗരം.
സെപ്റ്റംബർ 22 മദ്രാസ് നഗരം സ്ഥാപിതമായ ദിവസമാണ്.
1632ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനി മദ്രാസ് പട്ടണം എന്ന ഒരു മുക്കുവഗ്രാമം വിലയ്ക്ക് വാങ്ങിയാണ് തുടക്കം. പിന്നീട് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സർക്കാരിൻ്റെ കീഴിൽ ഇന്നത്തെ ആന്ധ്രയും, തെലിങ്കാനയും, കർണാടകത്തിൻ്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗവും, മലബാറും ഉൾപ്പെട്ട മദ്രാസ് പ്രവിശ്യയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി നഗരം മാറി. ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനി സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഫോർട്ട് സെൻ്റ് ജോർജ് ആണ് ഇന്നും തമിഴ് നാട് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിൻ്റെ ഭരണകേന്ദ്രം.

22 September is the foundation day of the Chennai/Madras City.
It all began on 22 August 1632, when the East India Company obtained the lease for a three mile strip of a fishing village along the Cormandal coast, named Madraspattanam. The original name is said to be Puliyur Kottam.
The town itself came into being with the establishment of the Fort St George in 1644.
The town grew into the present mega city over the centuries, and saw occupation by the Portuguese, Dutch, and the British.
The British empire made Madras, a Presidency under the Viceroy of India. The present Andhra, parts of Karnataka, Telengana and Malabar were part of the Madras State . The bifurcated new Madras State was renamed as Tamil Nadu later.
The name of the city also was changed to Chennai, a few decades after independence.
‘The Icons of MADRAS ‘, a publication by the Hindu, edited by Kamala Ramakrishnan, gives a fascinating look into the memorable establishments in the city which have survived over the centuries .
It is interesting to learn that the Madras Literary Society is the oldest surviving literary organization in India, whose library possesses some of the rarest old books . The oldest is ‘Aristotelis Opera Omnia’, the complete works of Aristotle in Greek and Latin, published in 1619.
Another rare book is the iconic ‘Horti Indici Malabarici ‘, the collection of the flora of Kerala, compiled by the Dutch Governor, Henric Van Reed.
The Madras Literary Society was founded in 1812.
