18 August 2024 is the 73rd foundation day of IIT Kharagpur, West Bengal, the first Indian Institute of Technology in India.

The great fortune of independent India was that Gandhiji chose Jawaharlal Nehru as the person to lead the government. Nehru had a clear vision that India needed to have institutions of higher learning, engineering and technology to achieve the goals of a developing nation.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Nehru’s trusted colleague and the Minister for Education shared the vision of the Prime Minister.
Kharagpur is the very first IIT to be established to achieve Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision of an Institute that would lead the nation into scientific excellence and technological progress .
The prestigious Institute was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Education, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1951.
The institute situated in a 2100 acres campus is an Institution of National Importance and imparts higher education to more than 2200 students.
Many more IITs and IIMs were established in the subsequent years.
