The Best Football Player.
The Golden Ball for the best player and the Golden Boot for the top scorer have been awarded at the World Cup only since 1982. Paolo Rossi of Italy won both awards that year.
Prior to 1982, there were several players who were both the top player and top goal scorer in the World Cup. Pele won both twice, in 1958 and 1970, and Johan Cruyff won both in 1974.
Two players have won both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball at the same FIFA World Cup.
1. Ronaldo (Brazil) – 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo won the Golden Boot by scoring 4 goals, and also won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. He led Brazil to the final of the 1998 World Cup.
2. Lionel Messi (Argentina) –
2014 FIFA World Cup.
Messi won the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2014 World Cup, where he scored 4 goals and led Argentina to the final. He also won the Golden Boot that year.
The Golden Boot is awarded to the top goalscorer of the World Cup, while the Golden Ball is given to the overall best performing player of the tournament, as voted by a FIFA technical study group.
