M.T. Vasudevan Nair @91.
Celebrated Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair is celebrating his birthday today. He was born on 15 July 1933.
MT has enthralled the readers through his novels, short stories, screenplays and films, and have won accolades including Kerala and Kendra Sahitya Academy Awards, Vayalar Award and the Jnanapitham Award.
Perhaps his greatest contribution to Malayalam literature is as editor of the Mathrubhumi weekly, the most sought after periodical by the writers and the readers.
He is instrumental in discovering and nurturing hundreds of aspiring writers.
He is the founder of Thunchan parambu celebrating the founder of modern Malayalam language, Thunchath Ezuthachan. Through his tireless and unassuming work at Tirur, he has been able to establish an abode of learning and reflection for writers from across the country.
Most of MT’s novels are placed in the ambience of his native village Koodalloor, on the banks of the river Nila (Bharathapuzha).
His novels, short stories, and screen plays are adored by Malayalees worldwide, and made the Valluvanadan lingo popular, in other regions of Kerala.
Only two novels “Manju”( based in Nainital) and “Randamoozham” (his take on Bheeman, in the Mahabharatham epic) are located outside his area of familiarity.
He won critical acclaim for his film “Nirmalyam”. Many directors owe the success of their films, to his immaculate screen plays.
MT is a self effacing person, who mostly prefers to remain silent, be it praise or criticism . He speaks through his pen.
According to tradition, anyone who has seen a thousand full moons (84 years ), as MT has, has lived a full life.
May the beloved writer live to see many more.
