Huli Kere Tunnel

Sir M Viswesharayya is considered the greatest engineer the country has produced.
The Huli Kere Tunnel in Karnataka is one of the major engineering feats achieved by him.
He constructed the tunnel to divert the water for irrigation purposes, nearly a 100 years ago with primitive technology. The tunnel was Asia’s first of its kind. The 3 kilometre tunnel was literally carved out of the mountain

The Huli Kere Tunnel was built during the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar of Mysore.
Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1931. Sir Mirza Ismail was the Diwan and Sir M Visvesvarayya , the Chief Engineer.
The tunnel carries water to this day.
