Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa.

The Sanchi Stupa is one of the greatest monuments erected by Emperor Ashoka after his renouncement.

Legend says, Ashoka chose the current site to build the Sanchi stupa because it was not very far from here that he met his wife, Devi, who was the daughter of a prominent Mahajan or banker.
Here are two photos of the spectacular Great Stupa – one taken before its excavation in 1882 by Lala Deen Dayal, and another very recently in 2019.

p.s: It was a great moment when Sasikala Joseph and I got an occasion to visit the Sanchi Complex and other monuments and edicts erected by Ashoka in the Kalinga Rajya, while our daughter was a student in Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. The Japanese have made huge contributions in the maintenance and upkeep of the complex. You are allowed to climb up and walk around the gallery which offers a magnificent view from the top of the hill. The architectural details are absolutely marvelous.
