The first Indian ICS Officer.

Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian to join the Indian Civil Service.
He was selected to the civil services in 1863, and returned to India in 1864 after completing his training and probation in England. He was posted in Bombay , where he served his entire career from 1864 to 1897.

The first officers date back to the 1750s, when the East India Company recruited Britishers to work in India.
They were known as the Covenanted Civil Service(CCS), as the members had to sign covenants with the company’s board.

Satyendranath Tagore was a firm believer in the ideology of the Brahmo Swaraj, and actively participated in the reformation movement founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and his father Debendranath Tagore.

Some of his notable works are:
Sushila O Birsingha, Bombay Chitra, Bhartvarsiya Ingrej,
and Amar Balykatha O Bombay Prabas.
