Bishop Thomas Kurialachery.
2 June is the death anniversary of Bishop Thomas Kurialachery (1873-1925), the first Indian bishop of the Diocese of Changanachery.
He was born in Champakulam and had his school education at St Ephrems School, Mannanam.
He had his seminary education in Rome, and was ordained a priest in 1899. Fr Kurialachery was appointed Apostolic Vicar of Changanacherry in 1911 and was consecrated Bishop in Kandy, Ceylon.
His lasting contribution to the Church is the founding of the SABS (Adoration Convent) congregation in 1911. He opened up a new vista in higher education in Kerala by establishing the St Berchmans College Changanacherry in 1922.
Bishop Kurialaserry expired on 2 June 1925 in Rome while on an official visit.
Mar Kurialacherry will be remembered as one who promoted women’s education in Kerala, a 100 years ago. The Bishop Kurialachery Memorial College, Amalagiri, Kottayam, commemorates his memory.
