1June is the birth anniversary of Marilyn Monroe (1926- 1962).

The American actress, model, and singer, was the most popular sex symbol of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Born in Los Angeles, she spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage, and got married at age 16. She was working in a factory as part of the war effort during World War II, when she met a photographer from the First Motion Picture Unit and began a successful pin-up modelling career. The work led to short-lived film contracts with 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures. After a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in late 1950. Over the next two years, she became a popular actress, and by 1953, Monroe was one of the most marketable Hollywood stars.

Like her films, Monroe’s troubled private life also received much attention. Her marriages to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio, and to playwright Arthur Miller, were highly publicised, and both ended in divorce. She allegedly had a relationship with John F. Kennedy, the President of the United States.

On August 4, 1962, she was found dead, at age 36, from an overdose of barbiturates, at her home in Los Angeles. Her death was ruled a probable suicide, although several conspiracy theories have been proposed in the decades following her death.
