A Historic Hunger Strike .

Bhagat Singh was only 23 years of age when he was sentenced to death by the British rulers.
But even at a young age, he was relentless in his fight for the country’s freedom, prior to his martyrdom.
Perhaps the most indelible incident in Bhagat Singh’s quest for Indian independence is the historic Hunger Strike for a total of 116 days.

Scientific research says, a human being can survive without food for a maximum of one month. Starvation for more than 4 weeks, lead to the body’s storehouse of protein getting exhausted and continual starving for more than 50 days lead to imminent death.

When Bhagat Singh, along with his comrade, Batukeshwar Dutt was jailed in Central Jail Mianwali, they met fellow inmate Jatin Das . In Mianwali, they were brutally treated by the jail authorities.

Jatin Das demanded better prison conditions for the Indian prisoners. The complete inaction from the Britishers prompted Jatin Das to begin a hunger strike. Soon Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt joined in. The hunger strike created quite a stir among fellow nationalists and the public in general, and gained widespread support during the month of June 1929.

63 days later, Jatin Das succumbed, and passed away in jail. Still Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt refused to relent. On the one hundred and sixteenth day, the British jail authorities finally agreed to their demands of being considered as Political Prisoners, and Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt ended their hunger strike.
