Lt Gen Mark Cubbon

Lt. Gen. Sir Mark Cubbon.

Cubbon Park in Bangalore is one of my favourite places to visit and the vast green expanse is one of the reasons for Bangalore being called the Garden City.

But very few know the reason for the Park getting its name.
Lt. General Sir Mark Cubbon was Chief Commissioner of Mysore during the period 1834-1860.

Mark Cubbon (1775-1861) came to India in 1800 and joined the Madras Battalion of the East India Company in 1801. From 1804 he served in Travancore under Col. John Chalmers. He again served in Travancore from 1827 as Commissioner General under the British Resident.
Mysore came under British rule after the defeat of Tippu Sultan in 1799.
The administration was in shambles when the Governor General William Bentick stepped in and appointed Lt Gen Cubbon as the Commissioner. He served till illness forced him to return to England. He died in the ship at Suez while returning. A statue was erected in front of the Public Building ( now High Court of Karnataka) and the park and the adjacent road was named after him.
The statue has been recently shifted inside the park.
I am sad that the park, which I first visited 50 years ago has lost its old charm after a busy road was constructed right through the park.
