Endemic Bird Day.
9 May is World Endemic Bird Day.
Birds which are seen only in particular geographic locations like islands, high altitudes, very cold areas etc are called Endemic birds.
Endemic birds, as is commonly believed, are not just restricted to isolated pockets in far-off areas.
Many of the common and familiar birds we see around us are endemic or near-endemic to the Indian Subcontinent.
These include:
– Indian Grey Hornbill
– Jungle Owlet
– Yellow-wattled Lapwing
– Red-naped Ibis
– Brown-headed and White-cheeked Barbets
– Spot-breasted Fantail
… and many more, around 230 in all.
