Immanuel Kant.
22 April is the birth anniversary of Immanuel Kant ( 1724- 1804).
Born in Prussia, then part of the Russian empire, the German philosopher, with his seminal works in epistemology ( theory of knowledge), ethics and esthetics, inaugurated a new era in the development of philosophical thought.
Kant joined the University of Krungsberg in 1740, as a student of theology. Though he studied theology, he was more interested in mathematics and physics. Kant began studying the works of Issac Newton and published his first book in 1744.
The death of his father in 1746 forced him to be a private tutor and for the next 15 years he devoted his time and energy in the development of his theses.
In 1755 he proposed a nebular theory on the formation of the solar system. It was further developed by Laplace and is now known as the Kant- Laplace thesis.
Even though he was offered a proffership in Berlin,he refused to leave Krungsberg. He was finally appointed professor of logic and metaphysics in 1770.
Kant is undoubtedly one of the greatest philosophers in history.
