SLOGANS that aroused India.
Most people have heard these slogans :
Saare Jahan Se Achcha,
Quit India,
Do or Die.
But not many know about the poets, revolutionaries, and nationalists, who rallied a Nation to fight for its freedom with these slogans.
Inquilab Zindabad. (‘Long Live The Revolution’):
Urdu poet Maulana Hasrat Mohani coined it in 1921.
It was popularised by Bhagat Singh in his speeches and writings, and he shouted the slogan, as he and B K Dutt, exploded a bomb inside the Central Legislative Assembly on 8th April 1929.
Dilli Chalo (‘Onward To Delhi’):
Subhas Chandra Bose used this slogan to motivate his Indian National Army ( Azad Hind Fauj).
It was a clarion call to capture the country’s seat of power in Delhi. The slogan ‘Jai Hind’ is also attributed to him.
Quit India:
Yusuf Meherally, socialist, trade unionist, and former Mayor of Bombay ( Mumbai), coined this rallying cry of the movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi on 8th August 1942.
He also came up with ‘Simon Go Back’, relating to the Simon Commission’s visit to India in 1928.
Do Or Die:
Mahatma Gandhi, launching the Quit India movement on 8th August 1942, said: “Here is a mantra that I give you. ‘Do or Die’. We shall either free India or die trying; we shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery.”
Satyameva Jayate (‘Truth Alone Triumphs’):
The phrase originally appears in the Mundaka Upanishad.
It was popularised by the nationalist leader Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1918, during his second term as Congress President. The words are also inscribed on India’s State Emblem.
Saare Jahan Se Achcha:
These words are from Urdu poet Muhammad Iqbal’s song Taranah-e-Hindi of 1904.
