23 March is the birth anniversary of the famous German Social psychologist and humanistic philosopher Erich Fromm ( 1900-1980).

Born in Frankfurt Germany in a Jewish family he obtained his PhD in Sociology from the Heidelberg University in 1922. In 1930 he joined the Frankfurt Institute of Social Research but had to flee Germany to avoid persecution by the Nazis. He joined the University of Columbia at New York, USA in 1934.
Fromm beloved that freedom was an aspect of human nature that we either escape or embrace. Use of escape mechanisms were the root of psychological conflicts.
He didn’t believe in Freud’s theory that character is fixed. According to him, the five essential sides of human character are Relatedness, Rootedness, Transcendence, Sense of Identity and Frame of Orientation.
Fromm says that the five character types are Productive, Exploitative, Hoarding, Receptive and Marketing.

” There is no meaning to Life except the meaning man gives his life”.
” The human dilemma is that having the ability to reason, man can think about his isolated position”
