Coconut Oil at Cochin, Kerala, India, 1912

Coconut Oil at Cochin , 1912

This is from the pages of the book ” Century in Malabar Peirce Leslie & Company published in year 1962 .

The stories of two great friends RH Peirce & P Leslie , started with the procurement of Coconut Oil to Ceylon and Cochin in 1850s.

Just imagine, their story starts with an oil that rose to fame, then declined to the dumps as an evil fat and has now re-surged again to become the oil of choice and touted to cure everything in the western world, after all of hundred and sixty six years!

Well, anyway they went to Ceylon to buy coconut oil for the manufacture of candles, being sent there by Price and Co for the Patent Candle Co. Soon Peirce meandered to Cochin where he was recorded as dealing with spices and settling down there to manage Wilson, Ritchie and Co. Leslie incidentally was managing another company until then, named AC Brice and Co. They then formed and established the Peirce Leslie & Co in 1862.

The featured picture from year 1912 , shows barrels of coconut oil in the Peirce Leslie & Company yard in Cochin.
